Google has always been able to see where you’re going thanks to its navigation app, but that’s about to change with the help of a new feature on Google Maps known as Incognito Mode.
Incognito Mode essentially lets you hide your location and where you’re going, which can be useful in certain situations. However, it has a few drawbacks. When Incognito Mode is on, Google Maps won’t save the location you searched for on your device and you will not be able to share your locations with your family and friends—at least until you turn it off.
That said, here’s how it works.
How to Turn on Incognito Mode on Google Maps
- Open the Google Maps app on your Android phone.
- Tap the profile icon, which is located at the top right corner of the app.
- Tap Turn on Incognito Mode.
How to Turn off Incognito Mode
- Open the Google Maps app.
- Select your profile icon in the app.
- Select Turn off Incognito Mode.
Keep in mind that when Incognito Mode is turned on, you won’t be able to use certain features like location sharing, For You (also known as personalized recommendations), and offline maps, among many others.
There are other useful features you won’t be able to access such as your search history, commute, location history, notifications and messages, Google Assistant, search completion and suggestions, Your Places, and community contributions.
